Juno Award Wining composer Vivian Fung debuts BIENNALE SNAPSHOTS at the VSO
World premiere of Vancouver Biennale commission will launch the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s 2015 – 2016 season.
On September 26 and 28 at the Orpheum Theatre, the Vancouver Biennale brings together JUNO® Award-winning Canadian composer Vivian Fung and the JUNO® Award-winning Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Bramwell Tovey for the world premiere of Biennale Snapshots, a commissioned work inspired by five of the Vancouver Biennale’s Open Air Museum public art installations.

Oliver Stone returns to the Vancouver Biennale

Hugo Franca In New Westminster
Vancouver, Canada – The Vancouver Biennale announces the unveiling of the first of three new public art installations in New Westminster. The City of New Westminster is the fourth municipality in the Lower Mainland to participate in the Vancouver Biennale 2014 - 2016 Open Air Museum exhibition. The first of these three artworks is a sculptural piece from the series PUBLIC FURNITURE | URBAN TREES by Brazilian artist Hugo França. On Thursday, May 28th this artwork will be unveiled along the Waterfront Esplanade in New Westminster’s Quayside neighbourhood.

CineFest LIVE Ai Weiwei Film Retrospective
The Vancouver Biennale kicks off the 2nd year of CineFest LIVE with a film retrospective of the internationally renowned and controversial Chinese artist and human rights activist Ai Weiwei. The 27 film retrospective will launch with a double bill featuring the Vancouver premiere of Ai Wewei: The Fake Case by Andreas Johnsen followed by the equally controversial documentary Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry by Alison Klayman. Given that the artist is restricted from leaving China, Global TV’s national film critic Katherine Monk will host the Monday, April 13 screenings at the Rio Theatre.

Trans Am Totem by Vancouver Artist Marcus Bowcott
Vancouver, Canada. The Vancouver Biennale announces its latest public art installation “Trans Am Totem”, by Vancouver artist Marcus Bowcott. The 10 meter high, 11,340 kilogram (33 foot, 25,000 pound) sculpture, located at Quebec Street and Milross Avenue, is composed of five real scrap cars stacked upon an old growth cedar tree. The artwork considers our consumer “out with the old, in with the new” culture in relation to the site, its history and Vancouver’s evolving identity.

The site-specific neon work, hung on the façade of the Vancouver Community College building at 250 West Pender Street, marks a physical division between the Downtown East Side and the commercial and financial districts that border it.
