Sand Drawings
Spanish Banks, Vancouver
Focusing on the beaches of Spanish Banks, Denevan will create one of the world's largest free-hand sand-drawings. Jim Denevan is an artist, creating ethereal sand drawings; a chef, celebrating food at the source with his organization "Outstanding in the Field”; and a surfer, writing upon the surface of a wave. Denevan creates large scale sand drawings along the coasts of California and the Dry Lake Beds of Nevada. From the ground, these drawn environments are experienced as places. Places to be in and explore, challenging our relationship within the environment. For a time the drawing is a place that exists in the indeterminate space of these vast landscapes.

This cross-curricular, multi-grade, inquiry-based project takes students to the Biennale
International Public Art installations to inject a sense of real purpose into curriculum
studies. The workshop will be an introduction to:
Openness: opening the mind to learning and the creation of understanding;
Reflection: background to the art and artist, sculpture in public places,developing a curriculum challenge and the focus of a guiding question; and
Creativity: students’ creation as an expression of learning and taking action.
Workshop presenters Tiana Blouin and Jessica Eguia developed a complete set of curriculum guides for ten Biennale installations in collaboration with the staff andstudents of King George Secondary and Biennale Vancouver.
Four follow-up workshops will be offered to expand understanding and application of the curriculum.Vancouver Biennale (VB) is an invitation to explore our lived world while developing BCPLOs and curriculum standards. Vancouver Biennale curriculum and lesson plans are designed to encourage active, engaged, inquiry based learning utilizing the 2010/2011 Vancouver Biennale installations. Moving curriculum topics into the community stimulates a sense of real inquiry for both teachers and students. Experiential learning touching on student knowledge, and multiple intelligences is at the core of VBcurriculum and lesson plans. Our goal is to develop fully inclusive, cross curricular,inquiry-based lesson plans that are easily accessible and fun to explore.
All lesson plans have been field tested and offer suggested activities, curriculum challenges and creative learning expressions.
